I would have been sure it was all a dream if she hadn’t been dozing naked on my chest when I woke up again. I glanced at the clock beside the bed. It was nearly noon, but I had no desire to get out of bed. She inhaled deeply and snuggled down again on me, making something raw and tender expand inside my chest. Right behind it came the urge to take her again, the need to feel her almost overwhelming, adding to the sensations budding inside me.

Had she really taken all of me? My mind played through the images I’d captured of our bodies together, adding a sense of urgency to my desire. Before I could move my phone buzzed beside the bed. I reached for it carefully, trying not to disturb Annie, planning to let the call roll to voicemail. I stopped when I saw Thomas Meenan’s number come up on the screen.

“Hello?” I said, keeping my voice low, trying not to disturb my sleeping beauty.

“Mr. Alexander? Is everything all right? I can barely hear you.”

“Yes, I’m fine. I was just sleeping. What’s up?”

“Sorry to disturb you, but Mr. McGill and I were not able to reach Ms. Clemons. Do you know where she is, and if she is well?” Annie raised her head from my chest and blinked sleepily at me, a little smile on her face that looked like she was planning to devour me all over again.

“She’s fine. I guess we left her phone downstairs last night. Do you need to speak with her?”

“Both of you. Can you put me on speaker again?” I activated the speaker, and told him to go ahead. “Ms. Clemons?”

“Yes,” she answered, sounding every bit as sleepy as I had when I answered the phone. To his credit, Meenan didn’t comment or question. He went about his business with the level of professionalism I was coming to expect from him.

“Mr. McGill has informed me that he has been unable to locate Todd Barnes. No one is home at his residence, and his staff all say they haven’t seen him for two days.” She was waking up now. I could feel the tension in her body growing with every word Meenan spoke. “Have you had any additional contact with him?”

“No,” she told him, sliding off me onto the bed to sit up. I sat up, too and took her hand in mine, willing her to see that she had nothing to fear as long as I was with her.

“Mr. McGill is on his way to speak with you, and gather any additional information you might have that could help us locate him.”

“I’m not sure I can tell him anything more. I’m pretty sure we covered it all last night.”

“Still, speak with him and make sure. If nothing else, I will feel better that he is there with you and Mr. Alexander as long as Mr. Barnes’ location is unknown.” Her eyes met mine.

“No,” I told her, already sensing that she was ready to ask me to leave again.
